Archaeobotanical Investigations at the High Medieval Wurt Mound of Upleward in the Krummhörn Area, district of Aurich
Two radiocarbon determinations have been obtained from organic layers, which had been sampled by auger and undergone archaeobotanical analysis, at the base of the high medieval Wurt mound of Upleward in the Krummhörn. Consisting predominantly of cultivated plant remains, the samples returned dates of the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. It had previously been assumed that the Wurt had a core dating to the Roman Iron Age. Instead the results point to the pre-Roman Iron Age, these layers thus provide one of the earliest indications for the occupation of the German salt marshes. The accompanying flora was characterised as salt meadow vegetation.
