The NIhK presents itself at the “Lange Nacht der Wissenschaft”
On June 21, the 3rd Long Night of Science took place in the Botanical Garden of the City of Wilhelmshaven organized by the NWDUG. In total 13 scientific institutions and associations from the region Wilhelmshaven/Friesland were present and informed by lectures, practical experiments and information desks about current projects getting into conversation with more than 400 visitors. The NIhK also participated in the well-attended lecture program with two presentations. At first, Friederike Bungenstock and Thorsten Becker reported on their research about the beach ridges of the Roman Iron Age in Butjadingen; later Kirsten Hüser spoke about current investigations at the Borgsumburg - a wall construction of the 8th to 10th century situated on the north-Frisian island of Föhr. In addition, information about the post-glacial development of the landscape, climate and settlement was given in the tent of the NIhK. Using drill cores and archaeological finds as well as greatly enlarged 3D models of pollen grains, it was explained what statements can be made about the living conditions of earlier cultures. A special highlight was a small excavation area where young researchers of different ages were able to gain their first experience with uncovering a skeleton - made of plastic.
