The Lower Saxony Jugendbauhütte visits the NIhK

For more than 15 years, young people interested in science have had the opportunity to complete a voluntary social year (FSJ) at the NIhK after finishing school, gaining practical insight into the various research projects based at the institute and the methods used. The FSJ is carried out in cooperation with the Hildesheim Youth Building Workshop of the International Youth Community Services (ijgd), which also regularly organises training courses and seminars lasting several days for participants, in which theoretical and practical specialist knowledge on a wide range of topics related to monument preservation is imparted. There, Leena Scholl and Adèle Wittkowski were busy uncovering layer by layer and documenting in detail approximately 2,000-year-old burial vessels from Apensen, in the district of Stade, in order to make them available for further research. The two also reported on their experiences during the excavation of a Mesolithic settlement near Groß Totdshorn, Harburg district, which took place in September.
