Exchange on coastal research topics in Wilhelmshaven

From 22 to 25 May, the 41st annual conference of the Working Group on Marine and Coastal Geography (AMK) took place in Wilhelmshaven for the third time as a joint event of the NIhK and ICBM. Around 50 scientists presented their current research projects. Presentations covered a broad spectrum of topics, including geography, sedimentology, ecology, geochemistry, coastal engineering, geoarchaeology and geoinformatics. The focus was on the current challenges facing the coast due to pollution, climate change and rising sea level, as well as sustainable social adaptation options in the past and in future scenarios. As well as the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts, contributions also focused on the Mediterranean, the Shetland Islands and the Philippine archipelago.

The two current joint projects involving the NIhK, WADWAD and CoastAdapt, were presented together for the first time, demonstrating synergy effects.

Alongside the lecture programme, two field trips took place, during which participants received expert insights into the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Wadden Sea and the East Frisian barrier islands.
