Joint annual meeting of the Geoarchaeology Working Group and the Palaeopedology Working Group

From June 6th to 9th, 2024, at the invitation of the NIhK, the 19th annual meeting of the Geoarchaeology Working Group and the 41st of the Palaeopedology Working Group of the German Soil Science Society (DBG) took place as a joint conference. After a reception at the NIhK on Thursday, the lecture program and poster presentations followed on Friday in the Gorch-Fock-Haus. The temporal and spatial framework of the contributions presented ranged from cave sediments of the last ice age in Egypt in connection with the spread of modern humans from Africa to Europe and Asia, to the post-Christian settlement history in the coastal area of the North Sea. On Saturday, an excursion led to Butjadingen, where research results from an ongoing NIhK research project were presented. On Sunday an excursion led to Elisabethfehn, where latest insights in peat formation and its consequences for soil formation as well as the effects of peat cultivation were presented in the field. A visit to the local Moor and Fehn Museum concluded the program.

A total of almost 60 scientists took part in the conference and the excursions. Lively discussions of the latest work presented provided numerous impulses for the ongoing and future works.
