The NIhK at the MESO25

NIhK archaeologists Dr. Svea Mahlstedt and Jeffrey König participated in the international MESO25 conference on Middle Stone Age research. There, they presented their latest findings from the DFG project “Mesolithic in Northwest Germany” in two lectures to an audience of experts from across Europe.
The conference takes place every five years at various locations, this year hosted by the Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici at the University of Ferrara (Italy). The event's close focus on research of the last hunter-gatherer societies gave Jeffrey König and Svea Mahlstedt numerous opportunities to discuss the results of the NihK Mesolithic projects and gather ideas for their future work. The NIhK researchers already maintain regular contact with numerous colleagues from Germany and abroad, and their network expands with each conference.
The conference also saw the launch of the new neue Oxford Handbook of Mesolithic Europe – a book of over 1,000 pages that will now be considered a standard reference on this period.
The program of Meso2025 also included an excursion to the Dolomites, to the famous Mondeval de Sora archaeological site and the Museo Vittorino Cazzetta. The conference Meso2030 will take place in five years in Faro, Portugal.
