News from the Conservation Department
Since the beginning of August 2024, two new colleagues have joined the NIhK Conservation Department - initially for four weeks. With many years of experience preserving particularly extensive archaeological find complexes, the qualified conservator Vera Dröber is working on uncovering the countless heavily corroded iron objects from the well-known cremation cemetery at Nienbüttel (Uelzen district). She is supporting the research funded by the state of Lower Saxony through the Pro*Niedersachsen programme, which aims to decode the complex early historical burial rituals in the area of the necropolis.
Lauriane Boudeau, who is currently completing her Master's degree at the Institut national du patrimoine in Aubervilliers near Paris, is carrying out extensive fine stratigraphic investigations on a textile find from the early medieval fortress Starigard Oldenburg (Ostholstein district) that was recovered decades ago but is still in excellent condition. The work is being carried out as part of an inter-institutional collaboration between the Archaeological Museum Schloss Gottorf in Schleswig and the NIhK.
