Formation history of the East Frisian Islands

The East Frisian Islands are a key location for understanding the formation of barrier island systems in conjunction with the Holocene sea level rise. The results of corings, chronological determinations and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys provide evidence for the contemporary island stratigraphies and –chronologies, the shifting of the islands as well as effects that influenced their development such as singular events or possible changes of tidal regimes. The project’s further aims include finding evidence for the initial stages of island formation and determining their age. As a combination of several individual studies the project is run by Dr. F. Bungenstock at the NIhK in cooperation with Priv. Doz. Dr. H. Freund of the Institute Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment at Oldenburg University.
