On the Frisian chiefs‘ trail ...

Sponsored by the State of Lower Saxony, the project "Manifestation of Power" investigates late medieval fortifications, the Frisian chieftains’ former seats, within the bounds of the East Frisian peninsula. One such fortification, raised by Garlich Duren at Tengshausen in the Wangerland, has been in the focus of a recent survey. Today, only a few inconspicuous topographic features mark the site, which has been abandoned in the 16th century. By means of geomagnetic prospection – a method utilizing anomalies in soil magnetism caused by archaeological features – it has now been possible to uncover the fortification’s former moat as well as remnants of its buildings.
