The landscape archaeological investigations in the Mahndorfer Marsch (Bremen) in cooperation with the Landesarchäologie Bremen have started again. The main focus is on investigating the deeper layers. The drillings reach several meters into the depth and are transported in PVC liners to the Lower Saxony Institute for Historical Coastal Research in Wilhelmshaven for further investigation. Initial field surveys last year showed that the river courses in the area changed repeatedly. Floods also deposited thick sediment packages. Nevertheless, settlements also existed in this very changeable landscape. The dwellers had adapted to the extreme conditions and used phases with few floods or knolls in the landscape. The drillings now obtained allow detailed laboratory investigations to reconstruct the exact settlement conditions at different times.
