The NIhK mourns the loss of Prof. Dr. Peter Schmid

On November 28, 2022, the former head of the NIhK, Prof. Dr. Peter Schmid, died in Bockhorn one day before his 96th birthday.

Since Peter Schmid completed in 1948 an internship at the former Lower Saxony State Office for Marschen- und Wurtenforschung in Wilhelmshaven, he was an integral part of the institute's team. His name is intrinsically tied to the excavations in the area of the terp Feddersen Wierde and the early medieval burial ground of Dunum, projects which claimed many years of his career.

Another highlight of his scientific work was the conception of the project Siedlungskammer Flögeln, which he coordinated as head of the institute.

Even after Peter Schmid retired in 1991, he remained to be a part of the institute. Until the last years of his life, Peter Schmid continued his research and supported the institute's new projects to the best of his ability.

The death of Peter Schmid is a great loss - we will miss him very much.
